WW2 British Army Saddle / Mule Pack Leather Pannier (Purpose Unknown)

This well constructed pannier was made by the Walsall based company ''M. Harvey & co Ltd in 1941 but its specific purpose remains a bit of a mystery.

The 13 1/2 inch long leather case/pannier is fitted both ends with heavy gauge metal hanging rings being the type used on horse & mule saddle packs, it is also fitted with a carrying handle and a quick release fastener so not your average tool kit case.

Inside the pannier is a secured wooden strip with eighteen drilled holes all 3/8ths in diameter (approx. 10mm), the holes pass through the wooden strip which is approx. 2 inch deep with space below, from the top of the hole to the underside of the closed flap is roughly 1 inch so not enough space for tool handles .

Was this pannier for carrying ordnance, primers, signal equipment or even a tool kit for a mountain gun/ heavy machine gun, still unknown as yet.

The thick leather is in very good condition considering its age, might need a light feed but left as found, not polished, some light stains present on rear side along with the odd blemish/mark, light surface rust to metal work but will clean up, only seen one other identical pannier online and it was without a description but double the price.

please study the images in regards to condition.
