WW1 Chaplain Royal Navy Victory Medal (H.M.S Sutlej & H.M.S Bracchante)
A WW1 victory medal named to CHAPN H.A. Lewis R.N the famous Cornish Bard and religious author.
Reverend Henry Ardern Lewis was born in Worcestershire in September 1879 and educated at King's school Worcester and Hertford college Oxford, he was ordained into the Church of England in 1904 and would go on to do missionary work in Canada and Nigeria.
Lewis entered Naval service as a temporary chaplain (T.C.R.N) in May 1915 and soon joined the ship H.M.S Sutlej which had recently returned from the Dardanelles/Gallipoli campaign, H.M.S Sutlej main duties were escorting convoy ships in the mid & south Atlantic, West African station.
March 1917 Lewis was transferred to H.M.S Bracchante Flagship of the 9th Cruiser Squadron, he remained with the ship until June 1919.
After the war he settled in Cornwall as a Church of England minister, wrote many published works on religious history especially early Christianity in Cornwall and became a famous Bard.
The medal has lost its gilt finish but retains good detail, the original ribbon is in a very delicate state with splits & tears and handled with care.
