Major-General R.C.McCay KBE CB DSO Staff Car Pennant & Envelope - Chief of General Staff & Chief Military Adviser Pakistan Army 1948 - 1953

After the partition of India and the creating of the new state of Pakistan in August of 1947 some former British Indian Army staff officer's were tasked with assisting the transition and structuring of new military forces for both countries.

In this same year General Sir Frank Messervy was appointed Commander in Chief of the Pakistan army but this appointment was short lived, tensions between India and Pakistan were growing and this would eventually lead to war breaking out in 1948 (also known as the first Kashmir war), it is noted that General Messervy sided with the Pakistan border militia and not India, he was called before his commanding officer Lord Mountbatten he ''retired'' soon after.

Messervy's car pennant which is identical to the one seen above resides in the National Army Museum, it may have been originally acquired for Messervy as more than one would have been commissioned at the time, some would have remained in service after his departure.

In 1948 Major-General Ross Cairns McCay was Chief of General Staff Pakistan army, in 1951 he became Chief Military Adviser hence the connection with the envelope, Mc Cay retired from this post in 1953.

McCay was awarded the D.S.O during WW1 and had a distinguished military career in India and Burma during WW2, a quick online search will reveal so much more.

This historic wool/felt based pennant with bullion crossed tulwar swords and crescent moon is in good order but does have a some moth damage along with a very small loss of bullion wire on one sword (best to mention) , goat skin spine now slightly grubby, lightly stiffened with age.

The empty envelope also shows signs of age related wear with some creases, light staining and very small tear/hole.
