Marquis Of Stafford 1909 Commemorative Beaker (Scots Greys & WW1 RNR)
A 4 inch tall Sepia beaker commemorating the coming of age (21 yrs) of George Sutherland-Leveson-Gower the 5th Duke of Sutherland on the 29th August 1909.
Sutherland served in the regular army as a Lieutenant in the Royal Scots Greys between 1909 and 1910, from 1910 a Captain in the 5th Seaforth Highlanders (Territorial Force), in 1914 a honourary Colonel in the same battalion.
During WW1 he took a commission in the Royal Naval Reserve later becoming a Commander.
The Stoke on Trent made beaker is free of any cracks but with overall light crazing from the firing process, minute chips on rim, hardly noticeable, gilt on rim worn.
