A named WW1 EPNS cigarette case with a most interesting back story in both military & sporting history.
The London made case which bears a finely engraved crest to the Labour Corps was gifted to B.L.Osborn (unknown as yet) for his services between 1917-19 from Major Edward (Teddy) George Wynyard D.S.O O.B.E military division, Labour Corps.
As a young officer Wynyard was awarded the D.S.O and twice mentioned in despatches whilst serving with the King's Liverpool regiment during the Burmah Expedition of 1885 - 87 (3rd Anglo - Burmese war), in 1890 he became a captain in the Welch regiment, from 1899 - 1900 Adjutant Oxford University Volunteer and the list goes on.
Wynyard was a highly regarded cricketer and counted as one of the best batsmen in England, he captained Hampshire C.C.XI 1897-99, asked to join all England eleven against Australia but declined due to army duties, captain M.C.C New Zealand team 1906, M.C.C team to America 1907 and back in 1894 he was champion tobogganer of Europe.
Please see the image taken from the 1924 edition of ''Who's Who'' which highlights all his achievements both on the battlefield and playing field.
The case has numerous minor dings but nothing that stands out, good working catch, internal elasticated band has lost one metal end but easily repaired/replaced if required.
