Rare WW2 SBS Duty Plate - Squadron Quarter Master Sergeant J. Evans - ''M'' Squadron HQ, Aegean Islands (Leros & Castelrosso)
Original brass bed/duty plate that belonged to 2733873 Jeffrey Evans Welsh Guards - attached to ''M'' squadron HQ, Special Boat Squadron.
Evans left his parent unit to join the SBS in March 1943 where he held the rank of Squadron Quarter Master Sergeant, he would soon find himself on operations in the Greek Aegean Islands, Battle of Leros in 43 and Castelrossa in 44 for which he was awarded the military B.E.M.
A photograph and information about Evans can be seen on the excellent Special Forces Roll of Honour website (specialforcesroh.com) which was compiled over many years by the late John Robertson and sourced from the SBS archive, Evans can be seen having some ''downtime'' with fellow SBS member Karl Kahane (WW1 iron cross winner, attached L-Detachment SAS in 42, 1st SAS D-squadron 42-43, SBS S-detachment 43-44.
The rear of the brass plate bears the makers name ''Narborough'' Birmingham and is a typical example from their foundry, no fancy rolled edges, just stamped out and impressed with regimental badge, now with a lovely age acquired soft metal colour tone.
A WW2 SAS plate was recently sold at auction including buyers premium for just over £600, a SBS plate is incredibly rare.
