WW1 British Indian Army Officer's ORILUX Torch - Named - 3rd Skinner's Horse & Later C/O 141st Bikaner Infantry
A First World War British Indian army officer's private purchase 'ORILUX' torch that belonged to Lieut-Colonel George Tristram Van Der Gucht of the short -lived 141st Bikaner Infantry regiment, formed in July 1918 and having only one Battalion (A Batt) with Van Der Gucht as its commanding officer.
His service within the Indian army started back in July 1898 as a Second-Lieutenant with the 3rd Skinner's Horse, this being the regiment he would stay with for 20 years.
There is much research yet to be undertaken in regards to this officer but I shall leave that to the next custodian of the torch, some photo copies taken from the London Gazette will be included listing his promotions.
The torch itself is in very good condition having no damage to the lower lid & hinge, the leather case is a very snug fit making it difficult to remove and this was only done for inspection purposes, the main body of the leather case is superb but the top cover/flap does have some wear & tear issues, firstly a tear to the front edge and a breakage to one side of retaining strap, hinge strap re-stitched but long time ago, possibly during service.
Anything connected to the 141st Bikaner's is seldomly encountered which makes an item belonging to its commanding officer quite rare.
